Shawn M. Borich, MD, MPH, FACEP Regional Director
Shawn M. Borich, MD, MPH, is responsible for the oversight and operations of Emergency Consultants and Hospitalist Consultants’-affiliated hospitals in Richmond, Virginia. Dr. Borich received his Doctor of Medicine degree from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and his Masters of Public Health from the University of Michigan, School of Public Health. Board-certified in Emergency Medicine, he completed his internship and residency at the Medical College of Virginia - Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr. Borich has served on the Board of Directors of the Virginia College of Emergency Physicians and is an active author and researcher, also serving on Emergency Consultants’ Education Committee.
Michael F. Boyle, MD, FACEP Regional Director
Michael F. Boyle, MD, FACEP is a Regional Director responsible for Emergency Consultants’-affiliated facilities in Delaware, New York, and Pennsylvania. Dr. Boyle received his medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia, and completed his EM residency at Wright State University of Medicine in Dayton, Ohio. A past Clinical Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Texas at Houston, Dr. Boyle has served as Chairman of Emergency Services for a five-hospital affiliate in greater Houston and a six-hospital affiliate in greater Corpus Christi, Texas. He is active on the local and state level of the American College of Emergency Physicians, serving on the Board of Directors of the Virginia ACEP and as President of the Houston Society for Emergency Medicine.
James H. Ellis, DO, FACEP Regional Director; Medical Director, ELITE Emergency Physicians
Dr. Ellis received his Doctor of Osteopathy degree from the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences of Des Moines, Iowa, in 1988. He performed his Internship at Darnall Army Community Hospital at Fort Hood, Texas. His Residency program at Fort Hood was interrupted when he was deployed to serve in Desert Shield/Desert Storm.
Before receiving his Honorable Discharge in January 1996, Ellis received many meritorious medals and awards — these included the Bronze Star in May 1991, the Kuwait Liberation Medal in July 1992, and the Meritorious Service Medal in June 1994.
From 1996 through 1999, Dr. Ellis served as the Medical Director of the United States Secret Service in Washington D.C. His past appointments include Clinical Professor of the Department of Surgery at the University of Illinois School of Medicine; Assistant Clinical Professor, Department of Military and Emergency Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland, from 1996 to the present; and Chairman of the American Heart Association Operation Heart Beat, East Central Illinois Task Force in Urbana, Illinois.
Dr. Ellis has served as Medical Director for several of Emergency Consultants's affiliated partnerships and has worked with ECI since 2003. Dr. Ellis is currently Regional Director for the states of Kansas and Nebraska. He also serves as Medical Director for ELITE Emergency Physicians, LLP, and as Chair of the ECI Documentation Committee.
Dedicated to his profession, Dr. Ellis has participated in and written many medical publications. He gave the keynote address at the American Heart Association Regional Meeting in Gary, Indiana, in March 2002.
Kenneth R. Epstein, MD, MBA, FACP, FHM Regional Director
Kenneth R. Epstein, MD, MBA, FACP, FHM, currently serves as Chief Medical Officer and Regional Director for Hospitalists Consultants, Inc. (HCI). In this position, Dr. Epstein is responsible for the oversight and operations of Hospitalist programs across the U.S.
Dr. Epstein received his Medical degree from State University of New York Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York, and completed a residency in Internal medicine at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse. He completed a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholarship at the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied health economics.
Dr. Epstein is Board-certified in Internal Medicine and a Fellow of both the Society of Hospital Medicine and the American College of Physicians. He also received an MBA from the Fox School of Business at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Before joining HCI, Dr. Epstein served as the President of kre Consulting—a company specializing in Hospitalist program management—and as the Director of Medical Affairs and Clinical Research for IPC: The Hospitalist Company. Dr. Epstein has a valuable understanding of how to enhance both existing Hospitalist programs and new Hospitalist start-ups. He has an extensive background in the evaluation, oversight, and management of Hospitalist programs.
R. Scott French, MD, MBA, FACEP Regional Director
Dr. Scott French graduated from the University of Arizona Medical School where he was awarded the ‘Outstanding Student Award’ and elected to the national Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at Harbor-UCLA, and was recruited to become a full-time faculty member at Stanford.
A national faculty PALS instructor, as well as for ATLS and ACLS, Dr. French was also full time faculty at the University of North Carolina, and a clinical instructor at Oregon Health Sciences University and Emory University.
Dr. French has extensive experience as a Medical Director and Regional Director of Emergency Departments and is currently a member of the clinical faculty at the University of Washington School of Medicine. Scott is a highly respected leader in the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) and is a frequently sought after speaker. He has performed numerous consultations for hospitals and medical groups on patient flow, customer service, improving EMS relations, and lent his expertise on topics such as recruiting and retaining physicians, quality improvement, and post graduate training of physicians and medical directors.
Michael K. Frye, MD, FACEP Regional Director
Michael K. Frye, MD, FACEP, received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine. His internship and residency in Emergency Medicine were completed at Michigan State University’s Department of Emergency Medicine, where he served as Chief Resident. Dr. Frye completed his undergraduate work at Indiana University, as well, where he was an active member of Phi Beta Kappa, graduating cum laude.
Along with his many years of clinical leadership, Dr. Frye has an impressive background in executive management in physician-owned emergency and hospitalist medicine operations. He served as Chief Financial Officer of a private group providing management, staffing, and consulting services to the Carolina Healthcare System, one of the nation’s largest non-profit hospital systems, before assuming the role of Chief Executive Officer and, later, President. In these roles, Dr. Frye led the executive team responsible for the successful negotiation and transition into a larger physician group.
Dr. Frye assumed a leadership role within this new group as a Financial Director responsible for optimized revenue and cost savings strategies for sites in North Carolina. He also served as a faculty member for the group’s efficiency academy, developing course content and providing clinical instruction to physicians throughout the year.
With Emergency Consultants, Dr. Frye is responsible for day-to-day clinical and financial operations within his region. He serves as a mentor, educator, and liaison for the medical directors and physician partners. He also continues his role as educator as a member of the Emergency Consultants Education Committee.
Kenneth J. Heinrich, MD, FACEP Regional Director
Kenneth Jay Heinrich, MD, received his Doctor of Medicine degree from Rush Medical College in Chicago, Illinois, and completed his Emergency Medicine Residency program at the University of Illinois.
A board-certified Emergency Physician, Dr. Heinrich has partnered with an Emergency Consultants-affiliated LLP since 2004, including ELITE Emergency Physicians, LLP, since January 1, 2009. As a member of the ELITE team, Dr. Heinrich is licensed in Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, Wisconsin, Tennessee, and Virginia.
In addition to serving as a Regional Director for multiple sites in Tennessee and Virginia, Dr. Heinrich serves as the Medical Director for the Emergency Consultants Advisory Group. In this role, he provides consultations to hospitals across the country. He utilizes sophisticated simulation software to model how functional changes will have on-the-ground implications in Emergency Departments and Clinics. Dr. Heinrich has lectured at national conferences and individual hospitals around the country on many topics, including process improvement, patient satisfaction, and implementing change.
In 2005, Dr. Heinrich published an article in the American Journal of Emergency Medicine on “Chronic Digoxin Toxicity and Significantly Elevated BNP Levels in Presence of Mild Heart Failure.” He also conducted a Case Series of ACE-Inhibitor Induced Angioedema.
Dr. Heinrich is certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support and a member of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians, the American College of Emergency Physicians, and Illinois College of Emergency Physicians. He has also served in a Medical Director role at MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn, Illinois.
Steven C. Motarjeme, MD Regional Director
Steven C. Motarjeme, MD, oversees operations for Emergency Consultants affiliated hospitals in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Mississippi. A graduate of Loyola Stritch School of Medicine, he completed residencies in Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Pediatrics at The Ohio State University. In addition to his clinical and leadership role at The Wisconsin Heart Hospital in Wauwautosa, Wisconsin, Dr. Motarjeme also previously served as Chief Medical Officer and Chief Compliance Officer for SymMetric Revenue Solutions
Linda J. Nordeman, MD, FACEP Regional Director
Linda J. Nordeman, MD, FACEP, is a Regional Director presently responsible for Emergency Consultants Inc.'s partners in Illinois. She is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians and a Diplomate of the American Board of Emergency Medicine. She completed her emergency medicine residency and served as Chief Resident at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She subsequently completed the ACEP Teaching Fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. She has authored numerous articles and book chapters. She has presented nationally and internationally on various emergency medicine topics. Dr. Nordeman serves as the Chairman and Medical Director of the Department of Emergency Medicine at St. John's Hospital, Springfield, Illinois. In 2004, Dr. Nordeman was awarded the Clinical Teaching Faculty of the Year Award by the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine residents.
M. Scott Pirkle, MD, FACEP Regional Director
Dr. Pirkle obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1992 after attending medical school at the Louisiana State University School of Medicine. He completed his internship year in Internal Medicine, followed by a residency in Emergency Medicine, both at the Eastern Virginia Graduate School of Medicine in Norfolk, Virginia.
Dr. Pirkle is board-certified by ABEM in Emergency Medicine and is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians. He worked as an attending physician and medical director at North Shore Medical Center in Miami, Florida. There, Dr. Pirkle also served as Chief of Staff after serving two terms as Secretary of the Medical Staff. He previously held positions as a flight physician, as an Associate Professor for the Mt. Sinai Emergency Medicine Residency Program, and as a Faculty member at Barry University School of Allied Health Professions.
Subsequently, Dr. Pirkle has practiced with Lafayette Emergency Care in Lafayette, Indiana. He has provided patient care at several facilities, including to the St. Clare Medical Center in Crawfordsville, Indiana, where he served as Medical Director.
Before medical school, Dr. Pirkle earned a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish from the University of Texas and a Master of Science degree in Immunology from the University of North Texas. In addition to successfully implementing many programs designed to improve emergency department throughput, Dr. Pirkle’s area of focus is in the implementation of scribe programs throughout Emergency Consultants.
J. Jude Reed, MD, FACEP Regional Director
J. Jude Reed, MD, FACEP, received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Louisiana State University Medical Center School of Medicine in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1999. His Residency program was served at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Parkland Memorial Hospital. He is board-certified in Emergency Medicine and is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians.
Dr. Reed has served on various hospital committees, one being the Chairman of the Emergency Department Physician Practice Council in 2004 and developed evidence-based practice protocols for Emergency Medicine physicians. At Saint Anthony’s Medical Center in Saint Louis, Missouri, he was a charter member of the Neuroscience Service Line Committee and was involved in the development of the stroke center and stroke treatment protocols.
He has been involved in research and publications with his “Emergency department presentation of biotinidase deficiency: fulminant sepsis in a 4-year old Hispanic male” which was published in Pediatric Emergency Care, January 2004.
Dr. Reed received the Excellence in Emergency Medicine Award from the Louisiana State University Medical Center in May 1999, and is past President of the Alpha Epsilon Delta Pre-Medical Honor Society, University of Louisiana, Monroe.
During his tenure at Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital, he has been involved with the Length-of-Stay Committee, the Emergency Preparedness Committee, The Credentials Committee, the Medical Executive Committee, and he is the Physician Champion for Relationship-Based Care. He is a member of the Physician Advisory Board for the St. Charles County Ambulance District.
Christopher J. Richter, MD Regional Director
Christopher J. Richter, MD, directs Emergency Consultants Inc.'s operations for affiliates in the St. Louis, Missouri, area. A graduate of the St. Louis University School of Medicine, Dr. Richter also serves as the Chief of Emergency Medical Services and the Medical Director of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Christian Hospital and Northwest HealthCare in greater St. Louis. A past Assistant Professor at the Department of Emergency Medicine at Washington University, Dr. Richter serves as the Chair of the ECI Quality Management Committee.
Craig A. Rosenberg, MD, FACP, FACEP Regional Director
Craig A. Rosenberg, MD, FACEP, is a Regional Director for Emergency Consultants Inc. and Hospitalist Consultants Inc. client facilities in several states. A cum laude graduate of Georgetown University Medical School, Dr. Rosenberg obtained board certification in both Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine after completing his residency at Northwestern University in Chicago. He served as residency director for the combined residency program in Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Dr. Rosenberg is a charter member of the National Association of Inpatient Physicians (currently known as the Society of Hospitalist Medicine). He has worked as both an emergency physician and hospitalist. He has also developed and implemented both emergency medicine and hospitalist programs across the country.
Dr. Rosenberg has been a contributing member to the American College of Physicians, the American College of Emergency Physicians, the Illinois College of Emergency Physicians, and the American College of Physician Executives. He has been a Regional Director with ECI HealthCare Partners since 1996.
Jeffrey A. Schwartz, MD, FACEP Regional Director
Jeffrey A. Schwartz, MD, FACEP, directs operations for Emergency Consultants Inc.'s client facilities in several states, a position that he has held with the organization since 1991. Dr. Schwartz is board-certified in Emergency Medicine and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Emergency Medicine, as well as a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians.
From 1987 to 1992, Dr. Schwartz was Associate Medical Director for the Department of Emergency Medicine at MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn, Illinois. From 1989 to 1994, he was a member of the Medical Advisory Board and a consultant for Kurzweil Applied Intelligence of Waltham, Massachusetts. Dr. Schwartz has been an active member of the Illinois College of Emergency Physician’s Practice Management Committee since 1995.
Dr. Schwartz has delivered lectures and presentations, been involved with community EMS activities, and has published his research projects in The Annals of Emergency Medicine and The American Journal of Emergency Medicine. As an expert in emergency department operations, Dr. Schwartz has worked with hospitals around the country helping them to improve their operational efficiency. He has lectured about “Financial Planning and Management for the Emergency Physician” at past ACEP Scientific Assemblies. Dr. Schwartz also lectures and leads discussions on the topic of “Paradigms in Emergency Medicine” as it applies to the many changes facing the specialty, while also hosting seminars on topics including customer service, physician accountability, and the use of electronic medical records.
Donald E. Willman, DO, FACEP Regional Director
Donald E. Willman, DO, FACEP, directs Emergency Consultants Inc.'s operations for client facilities throughout northern Michigan. He is board-certified in Emergency Medicine and a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians. Dr. Willman has practiced Emergency Medicine since 1974. Before coming to work with Emergency Consultants Inc. in 1979, he was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine, College of Osteopathic Medicine, Michigan State University.
